Hello! I'm James and I design books, reports, infographics, internal comms, brand styling, pitches, campaign materials and more.
Beginning my career in book design in 2008, I cut my teeth at a small local firm before moving to London and spending 6 years in a large independent publishing house, designing and art directing for a wide range of books on the entertainment and reference lists.
In 2016, after a few months solo-backpacking around South America, I relocated to Bristol and made the plunge into my current life as a freelancer. I changed career path to work with a wider range of clients across a more diverse range of industries, and 8 years on, I now collaborate with design agencies, charities, social enterprises and startups from around the UK and across the world.
I love the variety and creative challenges that my work brings me, as well as the relationships I have built with brilliant business owners, agency directors, campaigners, facilitators and strategists along the way.
My design style: a distinctive use of bold colours, strong type and punchy graphics with extra attention to the little details.
My passions: working with companies who use design for good. ‘Good’ can be many things: a focus on sustainable design, campaigning for positive change, promoting wellbeing and a connection to the great outdoors, informing and educating people about interesting and fun stuff, and so on...
Outside of work I love to hike, travel, sit in a cosy pub with my dog, cook, watch footy, and occasionally do a bit of carpentry.
I'm always open to exciting new opportunities with nice people, so please fill in the form below if you fancy a chat!
